Medical Physics Resident

As part of our educational mission, Northwest Medical Physics Center initiated a two-year Radiologic Therapeutic Medical Physics Residency program in 2005, which was CAMPEP accredited in 2009. We have one to two residents on staff each year.

The resident has quarterly rotations at different clinical sites to provide a broad experience base. This includes but is not limited to external beam radiation therapy, low dose rate brachytherapy, high dose rate brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and stereotactic body radiation therapy.

Several items distinguish our residency from others. The resident will have the opportunity to participate in linac commissioning projects, which usually include shielding measurements, beam scanning, TG51, beam scanning report write-up, data table generation (PDDs, TPRs, Scp, Sc, Sp, OAR tables, wedge transmission, etc), treatment planning system validation, independent MU calculation program validation, and volumetric modulated arc therapy commissioning, It is also our goal to give the resident sufficient HDR experience to satisfy Authorized Medical Physicist application requirements. The resident will assist our Equipment Committee during the calibration intercomparison workshops (external beam chambers, brachytherapy well chambers, thermometers, barometers).

Resident progress is monitored via quarterly written reports and oral exam given by the site mentors and program director.

Application process:

We accept both MS and PhD applications. We are interested in applicants with an applied clinical focus. We will be accepting applications via the Medical Physics Residency Application Program between Oct 15 2018 and Dec 17, 2018. We participate in the Medical Physics Match program, which has a resident start date of July 1, 2019.

Applicants must be from a CAMPEP-Accredited Medical Physics Graduate program with the following courses or equivalent completed with a “B” or better: Radiological Physics and Dosimetry, Radiation Protection and Safety, Fundamentals of Imaging in Medicine, Radiobiology, Anatomy and Physiology, Radiation Therapy Physics with an 18 minimum credit-hour total. Applicants must be willing to move, minimally annually, preferably every 6 months; which gives the resident experience to multiple clinic modalities, equipment, and cultures.

We plan to have phone or Skype interviews with 10-15 applicants and invite 3-5 for on-site interviews.
